Lesson 1 – Welcome & Introduction

Welcome & Introduction

Welcome to class! Once you have completed this course, you’ll know:

  • What to expect from your toddler in terms of normal eating behavior
  • How to cope with some of the more frustrating and confusing yet normal toddler mealtime behavior
  • Learn strategies to support your child in eating well now as well as maintain or develop a healthy relationship with food for the future.
  • In terms of your child’s eating: what you need to be ‘strict’ about, what you can relax about, and where you should be flexible.

How the class works:

  • You can view materials in your own time once they are released.
  • We will send updates whenever new material is posted.
  • Material is organized in a way that will help you implement changes easily.
  • We encourage you to complete assignments to get more out of the class.
  • We encourage you to participate in discussions and post your questions.  To do this you’ll need to sign in to (or sign up for) Disqus.
  • If you prefer to remain anonymous, email us your questions directly at feedingbytes@gmail.com

To help you get the most out of the program and start implementing positive changes in your child’s eating behavior and nutrition as soon as possible, please complete two special assignments and one survey right away.

  1. Keep a 2-3 day Food Log of everything your toddler eats using the template attached below. As we move through the class, this record will help you understand what, if any, changes need to be implemented to help your child’s eating improve.  Please use the sample food log and template attached below.  Nobody will judge you on this food record because you won’t have to share it with anyone else.  It is solely for your learning and you will receive instruction in class on how to get the most out of this record: Toddler Food Record Template
  2. Video or audio tape a couple of meals with your toddler, preferably one in which the whole family (or at least you) are involved. We will show you how to analyze the recording to identify typical feeding pitfalls. From our experience working with families, it is always an eye-opening experience to see/hear you and your child during the meal.  If you don’t have a camera, we encourage you to use the magic of your iphone or computer to make the most of it.
  3. Fill out our short survey within the next day or two. It will help us to get to know you a little better and adapt the class materials to make sure they are meeting your needs. It also helps us ensure our program is effective.  You can fill out the survey here: Getting to Know You Survey

Coming Up Next: Learn about typical toddler eating behavior and red flags that may indicate the presence of a bigger issue.

Discussion:  Please tell us a little about yourself, your children and share your biggest struggle when it comes to feeding your toddler.
